What You??™ll Need
Your computers
Your home network
Slingbox AV unit
SlingPlayer
Cost: Sling AV $149
This project could keep you from ever buying or replacing a TV set again, and
could make you ignore your present set or toss it out. We??™re talking about moving
your TV viewing from a bulky box or an expensive flat-panel TV to your PC
screens??”heck, you??™ve got PCs all over the place and you spend all of your time with
them, so you may as well add a little TV to your screen.
The catalyst and means to take this drastic measure is the Slingbox AV appliance,
shown in Figure 9-1. Sling Media??™s Slingbox AV adapts video content, S-Video or composite
video, and accompanying audio to a broadcast stream over Ethernet. The stream
is viewed through a SlingPlayer application, with versions available for PC and Mac.
A computer with the SlingPlayer may be on your home network, for best performance,
but may connect to and view streams from the Slingbox anywhere on the Internet.
Step 1: Install the Slingbox AV
To install the Slingbox AV, four connections are required??”power for the Slingbox, an
Ethernet cable to your network, your choice of S-Video or composite video and audio
to catch video programming, and an IR remote cable to relay channel changing commands
from your PC to your TV or DVR, as shown in Figure 9-2.
