To conserve airtime and protect the use of your cellular service, you must
make the cellular connection manually.
Access the KR1 home page, log in, and then click the Status button in the top navigation
area. On the Device Info page, shown in Figure 16-11, you will see the status
of the LAN, WAN, and wireless (Wi-Fi) connections. The WAN section of the page
is where you control the cellular data connection (with the Connect and Disconnect
buttons) and see the status, including the cellular IP address and gateway, and DNS
information which will be passed on to the client computers??”there is no need to configure
this information. Since mobile routers are specific to Verizon or Sprint EV-DO
systems, they come preconfigured to connect to their respective networks depending
on the cellular data card or cellular phone you provide.
As Internet connections go, cellular is certainly not in the same league for speed as
cable or DSL services, but it can be consistent, reliable, and available in less-populated
areas where cable and DSL providers have yet to make their services available. Sharing
your cellular connection with a mobile router??”and, yes, it will work in the car with
a DC power adapter??”means you don??™t have to share your computer while it keeps
you and others in touch on the road.
