Project 22
Create a Server
What You??™ll Need
A spare computer
Your local network
Cost: Windows XP Home Edition or Professional operating system
$129 (if needed)
In previous projects we covered making Windows workgroups, sharing files and
printers from computers used by other people, and controlling the desktop of one
PC from another. These features are all very handy but have the drawback that
we??™re using someone else??™s computer to do these things??”and those users may get annoyed
at the possible disruption of their work, games, and Internet use.
There is a way to avoid the negatives and enjoy the positives of sharing, by dedicating
a separate PC to act as a server for all of these functions, and more. Then, if the
???server??? is Windows XP Professional or has a remote-control application installed, we
can control it remotely instead of wasting space for an extra display, keyboard, and
mouse. In the process we??™ll provide more granular control over the resources that different
users can access, by turning off Simple File Sharing.
Step 1: Configure a PC to Be a Server
Start with a spare PC. Almost any PC will do, slow or fast, as long as it can run at least
Windows XP Home Edition.
