Tivo file to
your computer that can be played on a computer that has the TiVo Desktop
installed, which includes the file converter for TiVo files to play them
through Windows Media Player or Apple QuickTime. Yes, you can do this
with the TiVo Desktop software, but this is a test for the next step??”to make
it possible to do this over the Internet.
Step 2: Adjust Your Router Settings
to Connect to TiVo over the Internet
This step requires you to revisit Project 3 to configure your broadband firewall to allow
inbound connections from the Internet to your TiVo.
Access your firewall, and navigate to the pinhole, port forwarding, or special
application settings page to add the TiVo address and TCP port 443 to the inbound
access list (see Figure 24-4 for an example).

166 Project 24
In this example, you will see that I had to configure the external port setting to
8443 to get past ISP restrictions against using port 443, and then have it forwarded to
port 443 to the TiVo??™s IP address.
After this, you will want to use a dynamic IP service such as No-IP.com and its
local computer application (see Project 23) to provide you with a steady hostname to
use over the Internet to access your dynamically addressed cable or DSL connection.
You may be asking why you cannot simply connect to your TiVo over the Internet
using the TiVo Desktop to download or share files.
